I do not remember who bought the first piece. I know she was a woman. In the early years, another wrote at two in the morning about a problem, and I answered badly. Not long ago, a third told me she had read every page of this website, even the one about the boxes, and thanked us for writing them.
I think about these women when I work on MYJN. The person who chose us. The person who asked us to do better. The person who noticed.
The one at two in the morning had a problem with her jewellery. I explained what we could do, then ended the message with “haha”. There were two of us then. I meant to be friendly. It read as though her problem were small. She told me so, and she was right.
I apologised. Afterwards, I went back through the website. Measurements, weight, surface, colour, photographs from different angles: I wanted the information to be there before you needed to ask. I still return to these pages. Someone really does read.
A photograph can make you want a piece. What arrives has to give you reasons to keep liking it.
We have stopped making pieces that looked beautiful in pictures but would not sit properly when worn. A pendant that refuses to stay in place becomes something you keep adjusting. I want you to enjoy having it on.
For Antoinette, we tested brass, copper, steel, nylon-coated wire and pure silver wire, looking for the fluid movement I wanted in a line of jade. Each finished piece takes more than an hour to make by hand.

There is care to give years later, too. If you have worn a vermeil piece for a long time and would now prefer it in silver, ask us. We can assess whether it can be refinished to reveal the sterling silver beneath. A familiar piece can look different and still carry everything you like about it.
I think about the things around the jewellery in much the same way. For an earlier gift, I designed and polished a horn comb. We selected the horn for its natural patterns. On a scarf, the little italic MYJN lettering was embroidered by hand. I wanted these to be things you might have chosen for yourself.
We change the gifts and presentation from time to time. I want the box worth keeping and the gift worth using. It pleases me to think that something we chose for you might find a place among the things you reach for every day.
I want a jewellery studio in Malaysia to have a point of view you can recognise wherever its work travels. I also want someone who loves that work to have a chance to own it.
That is why we offer sales. Loving a piece and being able to buy it are different things. I would like to make the distance between them a little smaller.
We have had opportunities to open in shopping malls. I have preferred the house in Petaling Jaya. Here, we can consider the whole visit: the scent, the light, the trays, the time you spend trying things on, and someone glad you came. I trim the garden and clean the pond myself. They are part of what you come to see.
There are a few of us making this happen. I trust my colleagues to make decisions for our customers, help when they are busy, and ask them to go home when the day is done. I am still learning to leave more room for life around the work myself.
The customer who read every page had spent time with things I sometimes wondered whether anyone would notice. I felt understood.
You might find a form you have not seen before, but somehow know you would wear. Or try something on and find that it makes sense with the clothes and objects you already love. Your reasons can be entirely your own.
If there is a piece you keep coming back to, picture it beside your face, or on your hand, on an ordinary Tuesday.
Choose the one you want to put on. Nothing in your diary has to explain why.
